Today's movies mark the beginning of the Civil War, a spaceflight day, and the birthday of Tom Clancy.

a Quaker family during the Civil War.  It
is based on a Jessamyn West novel.  This
is an excellent movie.  The Civil War
began April 12, 1861.

early days of the United States space program,
especially the Mercury 7 astronauts.  This
inspiring movie won Oscars for Sound,
Film Editing, Sound Effects Editing, and
Original Score.  It is based on the book by

Human Space Flight.

was a professor at Union College in
Schenectady.
