Movies for the Day, Saturday, July 14, 2018

Today's movies mark the birthday of Owen Wister, Bastille Day, and the birthday of Ingmar Bergman.









The Virginian (1929) is based on the classic
Western novel by Owen Wister, born July 14,
1860.  Some consider Wister the "father" of Western
fiction.  Gary Copper, born May 7, 1901, stars.  The movie
was remade in 1946, starring Joel McCrea, born November
5, 1905.  A television series premiered September 19,
1962, starring Doug McClure, born May 11, 1935.

Zero for Conduct (1933) is about
life in a French boarding school.  Today
is Bastille Day in France, also being
the French National Holiday.  This movie
continues our series of French movies
for July.  This is a highly regarded film.

The Seventh Seal (1957) is an Ingmar Bergman
"masterpiece" about a disillusioned knight
of the Crusdaes who seeks the mysteries of
life while playing chess with Death.  Bergman
was born July 14, 1918.
