Movies for the Day, Tuesday, May 1, 2018

Today's movies mark Law Day, the debut of Batman, and the formation of Great Britain.

about a judge in a small town in post-bellum
Kentucky.  Today is Law Day and this movie is the
first of several law-related movies I will feature
over the next several days.

Batman (1989) is the first of a series
of movies starring the Dark Knight.  It won an Oscar
for Art Direction/Set Direction.  It features
an American Film Institute Villain, The Joker, and
an AFI Hero, Batman.  Batman was originally
a comic book hero created by Bob Kane and
debuted May 1, 1939.

Cranford (November 18, 2007-  )
is a television series set in fictional
Cranford in northwest England
in the 1840s.  This drama has won
Emmys for Supporting Actress, to
Eileen Atkins, and for Hairstyling,
Cinematography, and Costumes.  There have
only been seven episodes thus far.  Great Britain
was formed May 1, 1707, and this selection
is the first of several England-related films for
this month (at least one per week).

Movies for the Day, Monday, April 30, 2018

Today's movies mark Blues and Jazz Appreciation Month, admission day in Louisiana, and the debut of Bugs Bunny.







Jam Session (1944) is a musical about
a showgirl trying to make it in Hollywood.  This
movie features some all-time greats in blues and
jazz, including Louis Armstrong and Duke
Ellington.  April is Blues and Jazz Appreciation
Month.

Louisiana Story (1948) is docufiction
about the Louisiana Bayous, a boy and
his pet raccoon, and oil production.
The film was commissioned by
Standard Oil Company.  This excellent film
is on the National Film Registry.

Bugs Bunny Superstar (1975) is a compilation
of 1940s Warner Brothers cartoons, and interviews with
cartoonists, home movies, and behind the scenes

Today's movies mark the birthdays of William Shakespeare and Jerry Seinfeld, and Japan's Golden Week Holidays.






Kiss Me Kate (1953) is a movie musical based
on a Cole Porter Broadway musical which in
turn was based on Shakespeare's Taming of the
Shrew.  This movie continues our Shakespeare
series.  Shakespeare was born April 23, 1564.

Seinfeld (July 5, 1989 to May 14, 1998) is
considered by many to be the greatest sitcom ever.
It lasted nine seasons and 173 episodes.  It won
numerous Emmys.  The stars were Michael Richards,

Seinfeld, born April 29, 1954.

Japanese fable pitting civilization against nature.

Today's movies mark a real-life murder in 1913 and the birthdays of Shakespeare and Carol Burnett.






They Won't Forget (1937) is about a high school
girl murdered in a Southern town and a big time
Northern lawyer taking the case of the accused.  This
drama is based on the notorious case later dramatized
for television as The Murder of Mary Phagan.  Phagan
was killed April 26, 1913.

The Ages of Man (1966) is a television
program starring John Gielgud in a one man
show featuring a collection of speeches from
Shakespeare's plays.  It is based on an anthology
edited by George Rylands to show the journey
of life from birth to death.  This show won an
Emmy as Outstanding Dramatic Program.  Shakespeare
was born April 23, 1564, and this selection
continues our Shakespeare series.

The Carol Burnett Show (September 11, 1967 to
March 29, 1978) is a classic variety/sketch comedy

All the King's Men (1949) is about a populist politician
who is corrupted by power.  It is based on the Pulitzer Prize
novel by Robert Penn Warren, born April 24, 1905, which
in turn was based on politician Huey Long of Louisiana (August
30 is Huey Long Day in Louisiana).  This movie won Oscars
for Best Picture, Best Actor, to Broderick Crawford, and Supporting
Actress, to Mercedes Cambridge.  A television version was
nominated for an Emmy in 1959 for Best Actress, to Maureen
Stapleton (Kraft Television Theatre).  This movie is on the

loosely based on The Tempest by William Shakespeare, whose

Charlotte Bronte about a governess and the mysterious
employer she has a romantic relationship with.  Bronte was

about a 40-year-old divorced teacher whose life is
changed by her decision to enter the Boston Marathon,
which is held today.  Joanne Woodward won an Emmy

Underscore.  The Marathon is usually held on the
third Monday in April which is also Patriots Day
in Massachusetts.

boy in China who helps his zoologist father rescue
a panda cub from poachers.  On April 16, 1972, pandas
