of one of the most famous horse races of all

is a television special in which the Peanuts gang,

Program (although enjoyed by adults also).

Today's movies mark a famous radio broadcast, Devil's Night, and a great boxing match.




The Night That Panicked America (1975)
is a dramatization of the hysteria caused
by Orson Welles' radio play of HG Wells'
War of the Worlds about an alien invasion.
The broadcast was on October 30, 1938.  It won
an Emmy for Sound Editing.

Beetlejuice (1988) is a comedic
and surreal look at the afterlife, starring
the devilish Beetlejuice.  This movie won
an Oscar for Makeup.  Tonight, the
night before Halloween, is Devil's

about the Rumble in the Jungle, October
30, 1974, in Kinshasha, Zaire, between
George Foreman and Muhammed Ali.  One
of the greatest boxing matches ever.  This film

12-year-old boy who faces the

Today's movies mark Halloween, a Statue of Liberty anniversary, and a great storm.





Ugetsu (1953) is a ghost story set in 16th
century Japan, but is also about much more-
family, love, war, and ambition.  Try this
excellent movie for Halloween.

the desire of a Greek man to emigrate
to America.  The movie is on the National
Film Registry.  It won an Oscar for Art
Direction/Set Decoration.  The Statue
of Liberty was dedicated today in 1886.

The Perfect Storm (2000) is about a a storm
of the century that in 1991 sunk
a fishing boat off Gloucester, Massachusetts.
The Andrea Gail was lost at sea in the storm,
which occurred October 28 to November 2,
1991.

is the story of a man's struggle for meaning after
he is moved into a nursing home.  The CBS Playhouse
TV episode is based on the poem by Dylan Thomas,
born October 27, 1914.  The episode won Emmys for Lead
Actor, to Melvyn Douglas, and for Writing.

young woman who suffers mental illness

about a soldier who can hear a mule
talk, but only he can.  This movie led
inevitably to Mr. Ed, a television series

The Glass Mountain (1950) is based on a Polish
fairy tale which featured a glass mountain and a
man's attempt to climb it to win the love of a princess.  The
man this time is a downed British airman who seeks the
love of his rescuer.  This operatic tale features
Tito Gobbi, born October 24, 1913, an acclaimed
classical vocalist as himself.

What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962)
is a black comedy about two former movie stars
living in a mansion, one a cripple at the
mercy of her demented sister.  This psychological
thriller dabbles in the macabre and horror
and is an excellent choice for Halloween

Institute Villain, Baby Jane Hudson.  It won an
Oscar for Costume Design.

Today's movies mark the birthdays of authors Oscar Wilde and Eugene O'Neill and the anniversary of the Cuban Missile Crisis.




The Canterville Ghost (1944) is a comedy
about a ghost in a castle.  It is loosely based
on the novella by Oscar Wilde, born October
16, 1854.  It is also a good Halloween movie.
It was remade in the 1990s for TV and won
an Emmy in 1996 for Music Composition.

Long Day's Journey Into Night (1962)
examines the decline of a dysfunctional family
in1910s Connecticut.  It is faithful
to the classic play by Eugene O'Neill,
born October 16, 1888.  A television
version was aired in 1973 which won an Emmy
for Acting by Laurence Olivier.

The Missiles of October (1974) is the story
of the Cuban Missile Crisis, which occurred from
October 16 to October 28, 1962.  It is based in
part on Robert F. Kennedy's Thirteen Days.  During the
crisis, the United States and the USSR approached
the brink of nuclear war.  The drama was nominated for
multiple Emmys and won one for Technical Direction.
