Today's movies mark the birthday of comedian Buster Keaton, the birthday of author Anne Rice, and the anniversary of the launch of Sputnik.




The General (1927) is a classic Buster Keaton
silent era comedy.  This slapstick movie set
during the Civil War features Union spies and a
stolen train.  This movie is on the National
Film Registry.  Buster Keaton was born October
4, 1895.

Vampire Chronicles (1994) is based on a
novel by Anne Rice, who breathed new
life into the vampire genre.  Rice
was born October 4, 1941.  October
is also Halloween month.

October Sky (1999) is the true story
of a coal miner's son who is inspired to
take up rocketry by the launch of  Sputnik,
Earth's first artificial satellite, by
Russia on October 4, 1957.
