Movies for the Day, Monday, October 9, 2017

Today's movies celebrate World Post Day and the birthdays of actors Jacques Tati and Tony Shalhoub and, of course, Columbus Day as a bonus.

Only Angels Have Wings (1939) is about the
adventures and romances of mail pilots
in South America.  Today is World Post Day.  The
movie is on the American Film Institute's top 300
films.

Christopher Columbus (1949) is a
biography of the explorer who convinced
the Spanish Court to finance his expedition
to the New World in 1492.  Today is
Columbus Day, a national holiday.

Mon Oncle (1958) is a great French
film about Monsieur Hulot who lives a simple
life in the city and visits his sister and her
family in the suburbs but does not quite fit in.
There is little dialogue, but this film won the
Oscar for Best Foreign Film.  Jacques Tati,
born October 9, 1907, stars, and directed,
produced, and wrote this light-heated film.

Monk (July 12, 2002 to December 4, 2009)
is a hit television series about a San Francisco
detective with obsessive compulsive disorder
as well as being a germaphobe.  Tony Shaloub,
born October 9, 1953, is Monk.  He won Emmys
for his Lead Role in 2003, 2005, and 2006.  The comedy/
drama/mystery lasted eight seasons and 125 episodes.
Other Emmys were awarded for Theme Music, to Guest Actors
(John Turturro in Mr. Monk and the Three Pies and Stanley
Tucci in Mr. Monk and the Actor) and to Randy Newman
for his Original Music and Lyrics for When I'm Gone
in the episode Mr. Monk and the End Part II.
