Today's movies mark the birthday of actress Janet Borzage Gaynor, the anniversary of the first space mission to the Sun, and explorer Thor Heyerdahl's birthday.




Sunrise (1927) is a tale of a farmer who plots to kill
his wife, egged on by another woman.  The farmer
battles good and evil within himself.  This silent movie
won Oscars for Best Actress, to Janet Borzage Gaynor,
born October 6, 1906, Cinematography, and Artistic
Quality of Production.  This passionate movie is on
the National Film Registry.

Solar Crisis (1990) is a science fiction
film about a space mission to the Sun
to prevent a solar flare from
destroying the Earth.  The first space
mission to the Sun, Ulysses, was
launched October 6, 1990.

Kon-Tiki (1952) is a documentary of
Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl's
re-creation of a possible voyage by
ancient mariners in the South Pacific.
Heyerdahl was born October 6, 1914.
Another film about the famous voyage from
South America to Polynesia was made in 2012,
also called Kon-Tiki.  This Norwegian film was
nominated for an Oscar as Best Foreign
Language film.
