Movies for the Day, Monday, October 2, 2017

Today's movies mark the birthday of Groucho Marx, of author Graham Greene, and of Gandhi.




Duck Soup (1933) features the Marx Brothers
comedy team in a "war" between postage stamp
size countries.  This is a classic comedy which is
on the National Film Registry.  Groucho Marx, leader
of the Brothers, was born October 2, 1890.

The Comedians (1967), with an
all star cast, features intrigue in
dictatorial Haiti.  It is based on
the novel by Graham Greene, who was
born October 2, 1904.

Gandhi (1982) is about Mahatma Gandhi, the great
leader of India who drove the English from his
country, depending on non-violent protest.  This inspiring
movie won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Actor (Ben
Kingsley), Best Director (Richard Attenborough), Writing,
Cinematography, Art Direction/Set Decoration, Costume
Design, and Film Editing.  Mahatma Gandhi, born October
2, 1869, is on the American Film Institute Heroes list.
