Movies for the Day, Sunday, June 10, 2018

Today's movies mark the birthday of Judy Garland, the founding of AA, and the Tony Awards.








A Star is Born (1954) is about a doomed
Hollywood couple, one whose star is rising and the
other whose star is waning.  This passionate movie
is on the National Film Registry and features the
American Film Institute Song, The Man That
Got Away.  The stars of the movie, James Mason and
Judy Garland, both won Golden Globes as Best Actor
and Actress.  Garland was born June 10, 1922.  Excellent
versions of this movie were  made in 1937 and 1976.  The
1937 movie won an Oscar for Original Story and the 1976
version won an Oscar for the Original Song, Evergreen (Love
Theme From A Star Is Born) (also on the AFI Song list).

Days of Wine and Roses (1962) is
about marriage and alcoholism.  This
movie, set in San Francisco, features an
American Film Institute Song, Days of
Wine and Roses.  The song also won an
Oscar as Best Original Song.  A good
version of this story appeared on Playhouse
90 on TV and was nominated for two Emmys.
Alcoholics Anonymous was founded June 10,
1935.

The Producers (1967) is about a Broadway
producer and his accountant who set out to
con investors.  This comedy won an Oscar for
Writing.  It features an American Film
Institute Song, Springtime for Hitler.  It is
on the National Film Registry.  The Tony
Awards for Broadway plays is today.  This movie
was later a Broadway musical.
