Today's movies mark the admission of Texas and the birthdays of Ted Danson and Ed Flanders.

The Last Picture Show (1971) is about intertwined
lives, especially young adults, in a small Texas town
in the early 1950s.  This movie is on the National Film
Registry and won Oscars for Best Supporting Actor,
to Ben Johnson, and Best Supporting Actress, to Cloris
Leachman.  Texas was admitted to the Union December
29, 1845.

St. Elsewhere (October 26, 1982 to May 25, 1988)
is about the lives and careers of staff at St. Elgius
Hospital in Boston.  This very popular medical
procedural stars Ed Flanders, born December 29, 1934.
It won Emmys for Lead Actor, to Ed Flanders (1983),
Supporting Actor, to James Coco (1983), Supporting
Actress, to Doris Roberts (1983), Writing, Lead Actor, to
William Daniels (1985, 1986), Supporting Actress, to
Bonnie Bartlett (1986, 1987), Art Direction, Sound Mixing,
Costuming, and Directing.  It aired for six seasons and 137
episodes.
