Movies for the Day, Sunday, January 5, 2020

Today's movies mark the birthdays of Jane Wyman, Robert Duvall, and the Prague Spring.

Which of today's movies would you watch?

Johnny Belinda (1948) is about a young deaf-mute
woman, rape, and ensuing accusation.  This
movie won an Oscar for Best Actress, to Jane Wyman,
born January 5, 1917.  Wyman was Ronald Reagan's first
wife.  A very good movie.  See also the Hallmark Hall of Fame episode Johnny Belinda, which was nominated for an Emmy in
1959.

A Civil Action (1998) is based on a true story
about a lawyer who, at risk to his career, takes
on a case involving serious water pollution and
resulting personal injuries.  Robert Duvall, born
January 5, 1931, won a Screen Actors Guild
(SAG) award for Supporting Actor.  A very good
movie.

The Name of the Rose (1986) is about
a "detective" monk in a 13th century
Abbey investigating a murder (a la Sherlock
Holmes).  This movie is based on the
popular book by Umberto Eco, born January
5, 1932.
