Saturday, March 4, 2017:  today's movies celebrate football on the birthday of famed Notre Dame football coach Knute Rockne, born this day in 1888, boxing on the birthday of John Garfield (1913) who starred in a great boxing movie released in 1947, and ABBA, whose music was an important part of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994) and whose first hit, Waterloo, was released this date in 1974.






Knute Rockne, All American (1940) is about the
famed college football coach and features future President
Ronald Reagan as the Gipper and the famous quote, "Win
just one for the Gipper."  It is listed on the National
Film Register.

Body and Soul (1947) is a boxing
movie which stars John Garfield,
born March 4, 1913, and which won
an Oscar for film editing.

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the
Desert (1994) in an Australian comedy about lip
sync performers, drag queens and transsexuals
which features music by the famed Swedish
group ABBA which released its first big hit,
Waterloo, on March 4, 1974.  The film won an
Oscar for Costume Design.
