Movies for the Day, Saturday, April 8, 2017

Today I suggest a movie to celebrate Jazz and Blues Appreciation Month, a movie featuring a early screen star, and an Iraq War biography.

The Jazz Singer (1927) continues my April movies
celebrating Jazz and Blues Appreciation Month.  The
Jazz Singer is a legendary movie and "first talkie" that
everyone should see at least once (or so many critics
say).  It is listed on the National Film Registry and
features one of the American Film Institute's list of
greatest movie quotes:  "Wait a minute, wait a minute.
You ain't heard nothin' yet!"

Mary Pickford, legendary screen
star, was born April 8, 1892, and
won an Academy Award as Best
Actress for her role as a flapper in
the romance and tragedy, Coquette
(1929).

American Sniper (2014) is the story of U.S.
Navy Seal Chris Kyle, born this date, April 8, in 1974.
This biographical war film shows him in action
during the Iraq War and at home.  It is based on
his memoir.  The movie was nominated for an
Academy Award as Best Picture; it won an
Academy Award for Sound Editing.
