Today's movies harken back to pre- World War II Berlin, to the 1950s, and to the heyday of the space program.




Cabaret (1972) is set in pre-World War II Berlin.
This musical, originally on Broadway, won many
Oscars, including Best Director (Bob Fosse), Best
Actress (Liza Minnelli), Best Supporting Actor
(Joel Grey, born this date in 1932), Cinematography,
Art Direction/Set Direction, Sound, Film Editing and
Music (especially "Cabaret").  It is based on
Christopher Isherwood's "Goodbye to Berlin."   The
movie is on the National Film Registry.

Bastard Out of Carolina (1996) is set
in the 1950s rural South.  It tells the story
of sexual abuse of a preteen daughter by
her stepfather.  It is based on the bestselling
semi-autobiographical novel by Dorothy
Allison, born this date, April 11, in 1949.
This Showtime offering won an Emmy for
Casting.


Bastard Out of Carolina






Apollo 13 (1995) is the story of an ill-fated
trip to the moon, launched this date, April 11,
in 1970.  This inspiring movie won Oscars
for Sound and Film Editing.  It was voted
Favorite Dramatic Motion Picture at the
People's Choice Awards.  It features an American
Film Institute Greatest Movie Quote:  "Houston,
we have a problem."
