Movies for the Day, Wednesday, April 12, 2017

Today, April 12, is the anniversary of the polio vaccine, the beginning of the Civil War, and the first Space Shuttle launch (today is also the United Nations International Day of Human Space Flight). Today's moves are selected accordingly.





Interrupted Melody (1955) is a biographical story
of an Australian opera singer stricken by polio
who makes a comeback.  April 12 marks the
anniversary of the Salk polio vaccine (deemed safe
and effective in 1955).  The movie won an Oscar
for Original Screenplay.  Eleanor Parker was
nominated as Best Actress.

The Civil War (1990) is a nine-part
comprehensive miniseries about the
Civil War by the acclaimed Ken Burns.
It aired on PBS from September 23 to
September 27, 1990.  Two episodes were
especially singled out for Emmys:  "The
Universe of Battle" (episode #5) and "The
Better Angels of Our Nature" (#9).  The
Civil War began this date, April 12, in 1861,
with the attack on Fort Sumter.

Gravity (2013), about the hazards and dangers
in space, is a beautiful movie which won many
Academy Awards, including Directing (Alfonso
Cuaron), Cinematography, Sound Mixing, Film
Editing, Sound Editing, Visual Effects and
Original Score.  It was also nominated for Best
Motion Picture.  The first Space Shuttle was
Launched this date in 1981.  Today is also United
Nations International Day of Human Space Flight.
