Today's movies mark an anniversary of a school for the deaf, International Mountain Day, and the birthday of author Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn.
Thursday's Children (1955) is about the Royal
School for the Deaf in Margate, Kent, United Kingdom.
The school opened in 1792 but closed on
December 11, 2015. This film won an Oscar
for Best Short Documentary.

is about a Swiss boy determined
to climb an alpine peak known as the
Citadel. Today is International
Mountain Day.

One Day in the Life of Ivan
Denisovich (1970) is based on the classic
book by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn about
a prisoner in a Siberian labor camp, the so
called Gulag. Solzhenitsyn was born
December 11, 1918. It was also an
episode in the Bob Hope Presents the Chrysler
Theater- it won an Emmy in 1964 for Supporting
Role by an Actor, to Albert Paulsen.
