Movies for the Day, Saturday, July 13, 2019

Today's movies mark Bastille Day and the birthday of Ingmar Bergman.

Which of today's movies would you watch?

The Rules of the Game (1939) is a classic
movie comparing and contrasting the affairs of
aristocrats and servants on a country outing.  This
social satire is about decadent French society in
decline.  July 14 is Bastille Day, France's
national holiday.

Smiles of a Summer Night (1955) is a
romantic comedy set at the turn of the
century during a weekend at a country estate.
It was later a Broadway musical.  This
excellent movie was directed by great director
Ingmar Bergman, born July 14, 1918.

Three Colors Trilogy (1993-1994) consists
of three movies:  Blue (1993), White (1994), and
Red (1994) each film portraying one of the
the three political ideals in the motto of the French
Republic, respectively liberty, equality, and fraternity.
The movies are not political:  Blue is about a woman dealing with death of her husband and child; Red is about a neighbor and
privacy; and White is about divorce and revenge.  July
14 is Bastille Day in France, a national holiday.
