Movies for the Day, Thursday, January 11, 2018

Today's movies mark the birthday of author Alan Paton, a Zulu war, and the birthday of director James Merendino.





Cry, the Beloved Country (1951) is about
black/white relations in South Africa and is
based on the novel by Alan Paton, born
January 11, 1903.  Another version was made
in 1995.

Zulu (1964) is the story of the heroic
stand by outnumbered British soldiers
against the mighty Zulu warriors in
Africa during the Anglo-Zulu War which
took place from January 11 to July 4,
1879.  In 1979, a prequel was released,
Zulu Dawn.

SLC Punk! (1998) is about punk
rock in Salt Lake City circa 1985.
It is loosely based on experiences by
writer and director James Merendino.
