Today's movies mark the birthdays of author Jules Verne, of actor James Dean, and of author John Grisham.









20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954) is
a Disney movie based on the classic Jules
Verne science fiction/fantasy adventure story
about a futuristic submarine, the Nautilus, and
its Captain Nemo.  Verne, often considered the
father of science fiction, was born February 8,
1828.  The movie won Oscars for Art/Decoration
and Special Effects.

East of Eden (1955) is based on the
John Steinbeck classic about two brothers
in a dysfunctional family.  It won Oscars for
Supporting Actress, to Jo Van Fleet, born
December 30, 1922, Best Picture, and a Special
Achievement Award, Posthumous Award for
Outstanding Dramatic Actor, to star James
Dean, born February 8, 1931.



East of Eden









The Firm (1993) is about a Memphis law
firm and its dark side.  It is based on the
bestselling novel by John Grisham, born
February 8, 1955.
