Movies for the Day, Monday, August 7, 2017

Today's selections are about Vietnam and aliens.





The Quiet American (1958) takes us to Saigon before
the Vietnam War, which began for the United
States with the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution passed
by Congress August 7, 1964.  The movie is mostly
a murder mystery from a novel by Graham Greene.

Apocalypse Now (1979) takes to the
heart of darkness of the Vietnam War,
which, as noted above, began for the United States
with the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, August
7, 1964.  A great war movie, based on Heart
of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, this film won
Oscars for Cinematography and Sound and is
on the National Film Registry.  It features an
American Film Institute Quote, "I love the smell
of napalm in the morning."


Apocalypse Now






The X-Files (September 10, 1993 to
May 19, 2002) is a science fiction television series that
follows two FBI agents as they encounter the
unexplained and aliens.  It won many Emmys.
The stars, David Duchovny as Fox Mulder and
Gillian Anderson as Dana Scully, were both
born in August, August 7 (1960) and
August 9 (1968), respectively.
