From nuclear war, to a psychotic killer, to Lucille Ball-  take a look at these movies.





On the Beach (1959) is based on the novel
by Nevil Shute about the end of life after a
global nuclear war.  Set in Australia.  On this
date, August 6, in 1945, the United States dropped
the first atom bomb used in war on Hiroshima,
Japan, followed by a second bomb on Nagasaki
on August 9.  August 29 is International Day
Against Nuclear Tests.

The Night of the Hunter (1955) features
a psychotic minister killer.  This thrilling
movie stars Robert Mitchum, born August,
6, 1917.  Mitchum plays Reverend Harry
Powell. listed on the American Film
Institute's Villains list.  The movie is on the
National Film Registry.

I Love Lucy (1951 to 1957) is the television
sitcom that set the mold for many that
followed.  Star Lucille Ball was born
August 6, 1911.  It won an Emmy as Best
Situation Comedy in 1953 and 1954, Vivian Vance
won an Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in 1954, and
Ball won an Emmy for Best Actress in 1956.  She also won
an Emmy as Best Comedienne in 1953.
