June 3, 1969), The Original Series,
launched perhaps the most successful
science fiction franchise ever. It was
created by Gene Roddenberry, born
August 19, 1921, and followed the crew
of the Starship Enterprise as it explored
the galaxy. Seventy-nine episodes aired.
