Today's movies mark the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution and a Twin Towers daredevil act.









The Deer Hunter (1978) is about the Vietnam
War especially with respect to the men in a
small industrial city in Pennsylvania.  Today is the
anniversary of the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, which
began United States large scale warfare in Vietnam,
August 7, 1964.  This movie won Oscars for Best Picture,
Directing, Supporting Actor, to Christopher Walken,
Film Editing, and Sound.  This thrilling drama is on the
National Film Registry.

Dogfight (1991) is about a group of teenage
Vietnam bound Marines in 1963 who vie to
bring the ugliest date to a party.  This movie is
set in San Francisco.  The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution.
which officially began the war in Vietnam for the
United States, was passed August 7, 1964.

Man on Wire (2008) documents the high-wire
daredevil stunt by Philippe Petit when he crossed
between the Twin Towers of New York City's
World Trade Center.  The stunt occurred August 7, 1974.
Petit was born August 13, 1949.  The film won
an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature.
