Movies for the Day, Wednesday, August 8, 2018

Today's movies mark the birthday of Fredric March, the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, and the birthday of Dustin Hoffman.








Death Takes a Holiday (1934) is an
allegorical tale about Death entering the
human world and falling in love.  It stars
Fredric March, born August 8, 1897.  See

Platoon (1986) is about soldiers in the
Vietnam War in 1967.  The Gulf of
Tonkin Resolution authorizing the war was
passed by Congress on August 7, 1964.  This thrilling
movie won Oscars for Best Picture, Directing (to
Oliver Stone), Sound, and Film Editing.  It is
the first of a trilogy:  Born on the Fourth of
July (1989) and Heaven on Earth (1993).



Platoon












Rain Man (1988) is about the relationship
that forms between two brothers, one being
an autistic idiot savant.  This inspiring movie
won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Actor, to Dustin
Hoffman, Director, and Writing.  Hoffman was born
August 8, 1937.  April is Autism Awareness Month.
